Jacob's Ladder Reviews
a literal-minded and outward-looking reskinning of Lyne’s elliptical and introspective journey through hell that’s as pointless as it is dull.
| Jul 3, 2024
This was disrespectful... not a film that can stand by itself.
| Original Score: 3/10 | Oct 27, 2020
While it's a competent production overall, Jacob's Ladder redux is ultimately pointless, just an inferior spin on the original that is the latest in a long line of unnecessary, ineffectual horror remakes.
| Original Score: 2.3/5 | Nov 15, 2019
There is no love or admiration of this remake in the writing or material provided. Writers Jeff Buhler and Sarah Thorpe showcase no real interest in evolving the content nor adapting anything to the present day, even if it is set within it.

Resembles the blandest of Lifetime Originals dressed up with cut-rate J-horror flourishes.
| Original Score: D+ | Sep 5, 2019
The new Jacob's Ladder is offensive garbage and wastes the talents of a handful of skilled actors who honestly might have arrived at a better film merely by free associating in front of a camcorder for two uncut hours.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Aug 29, 2019
Once again the Hollywood remake machine regurgitates another classic for contemporary audiences but botches every attempt to make it unique and invigorating.
| Original Score: 2/10 | Aug 26, 2019
Ealy's portrayal makes us care more than the screenplay, which turns into an incoherent mess.
| Aug 23, 2019
A piss-poor remake of a fascinating original work that never justifies its existence for a second.
| Aug 23, 2019
This reimagining is more focused on paranoia and the relationship between Jacob and Isaac than it is creating a terrifying metaphor for PTSD, and the horror element is largely forgotten. It doesn't really offer any depth beyond that, either.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 23, 2019
Only the commitment from the always-solid Michael Ealy saves it from being one of the worst movies of the year.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Aug 23, 2019
If you've seen the original "Jacob's Ladder," you already know what's going to happen. If you've never seen "Jacob's Ladder," why on earth would you start with this version?
| Original Score: D | Aug 23, 2019
The new "Jacob's Ladder" plays like a half-hearted sketch of the movie it could have been.
| Aug 23, 2019
The new "Jacob's Ladder" is less strange and scary, and more mindlessly action-packed. It doesn't feel like a dream. It's more like hearing a stranger describe a dream.
| Aug 23, 2019
This remake of the 1990 psychological horror movie makes a half-hearted stab at changing up the story, but in the end it just feels listless, without the original's disturbing existential scope.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 23, 2019
The whole movie lacks almost all of the original's punch...
| Original Score: 2/4 | Aug 23, 2019
A shabby, low-rent thriller with a few vaguely interesting ideas and an ensemble that deserves better material.
| Aug 22, 2019
As the plot moves forward, it loses interest in the metaphysical torment that made the original so gripping.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Aug 22, 2019
It was funhouse schlock with pretensions of seriousness, but a lot of its visual ideas oozed their way into the genre gene pool.
| Original Score: C- | Aug 21, 2019
Falls into all kinds of trouble trying to keep things lucid but is still diverting and entertaining.
