Jacob's Ladder Reviews

Dec 31, 2024

A Disastrous Misstep That Should Never Have Been Made The 2019 remake of Jacob's Ladder is a baffling and unnecessary reimagining of Adrian Lyne's 1990 psychological horror masterpiece. It takes everything that made the original a haunting and deeply emotional experience and strips it down into a hollow, uninspired shell of its former self. From the very beginning, this film struggles to justify its existence. Instead of offering a fresh perspective or meaningful update, it clumsily rehashes elements of the original without understanding what made them work. The eerie tension, thought-provoking themes, and profound emotional resonance of the 1990 version are absent, replaced by a muddled plot and a series of uninspired twists. The performances are serviceable at best, but even talented actors can't save a film this poorly conceived. The attempt to modernize the story falls flat, and the themes of trauma and reality, which were so poignant in the original, are diluted to the point of irrelevance. Perhaps the most egregious failure of this remake is how it diminishes the legacy of the original. Watching this film feels like watching a clumsy imitation of something far greater, and for fans of the 1990 classic, it's an experience that verges on sacrilege. Final Thoughts: Jacob's Ladder (2019) is a soulless and forgettable attempt to cash in on a beloved classic. It adds nothing of value and actively detracts from the original's legacy. Ship it, forget it, and move on-this is one ladder not worth climbing. An insult to the original and a film best left unwatched. Avoid at all costs.

Have to agree with most reviews here - the original was one of my favourite films that I still remember vividly after watching it so many years ago - so I was intrigued to see what this remake would add to the classic. I loved the original ending and shocked by the conclusion to Jacob's journey - I was also shocked with the remake - shocked at how bad it was - shocked at taking the key component of the original storyline and changing it be a diminished, unoriginal, lame ending, shocked at the direction, the acting and the audacity to give it the same name as the original - terribly embarrassing to all involved. Just hope the original gets some more plays as a result of this to give those filmmakers some more credit - going to watch the 1990 version again just to get this 2019 abomination out of my system!

Telegraphs every move it is going to make and is really dumb.

An insult to the original, this 2019 remake doesn't have anywhere near the same feel as the Adriene Lyne classic

An insult to the original, this 2019 remake is just not good

Jacob's Ladder is a good movie. It deals with the trauma of young men who as soldiers experience life and death with no explanation. They are sent in to fight enemies and who are they to do so without explanation or cause? Is it strange so many veterans come home a mess? Hooked on drugs or unable to function in everyday society? Let's DEAL with THAT issue. I knew a woman who worked a VA facility; I used to drive her to and from work at times. She'd tell me these stories of men (never women!!) Who were traumatized, had nightmares and "saw things." This movie deals with those issues. They ARE real. Now if we are dealing with this telling of such a story it is decent. Not as horrible as critics have said at all, it IS focured on what it is about without the religious tones being so heavy; rather "helll on earth" is more of what haunts its main subject. It twists and turns and YES, the story becomes about two brothers. It is a great movie in that sense. The wife of this story is not supportive enough or realistic on how she fails to support her husband; there is a big reveal as to why that is so I will leave that to you to discover. Michael and Jessie do a great job of giving what would have otherwise been a 1 star forgettable mess. It LOOKS good, the mood and feel is haunting but then it just ends. There is a devil in this story, and it isn't what you think it is at first. Take a look to gain a compassion for those who have suffered from the aftermath of war and like "American Sniper," "Full Metal Jacket" and "The Machurian Candidate" (The original AND Denzil's remake are classics) pay proper homage to the ravages of war and what they do to the men who serve. I would love to see a story about the women who serve and if they experience any of what the men do when they return home.

Decent, semi-original. Comes up with it's own twists to separate itself from the original and tries to do something new. Not even CLOSE to as good, obviously. 7.5/10

This remake of Jacob ‘s Ladder was something bearable to watch while searching I through a sea of movies on Netflix. It made me feel anxious and it was a very dark setting. If you're in the mood to see something confusing and depressing- this is a good choice. The acting was decent.

I watched the Movie because I love the Original, and what it inspired, a lot. And I have to say, I like this Movie, too! It is less of a Remake and more of a Reimagining, taking the Idea and some concepts and turning it into something new in the process, by taking other routes. There were a lot of Scenes and even costumes, clearly inspired by the original, but the Movie itself is its own seperate thing, with good actors and a solid plot. If I wanted to see the original Movie, I would have just popped it into my DVD Player and watched that instead. And thats what I can only recommend to others: If you want to see the original, its already made! If you want to see a modern spin on the original Idea? Watch Jacob's Ladder (2019).

Terrible misrepresentation of PTSD and substance abuse

I thought it was a great movie, gotta pay attention to know what's going on. Probably got such a low rating because the original cast was white...... (go figure).

This movie is bad. This movie isn't the worst bad movie I've ever seen, and isn't close to that, but the main problem here is Terrible Acting. The main character walks around the Entire movie with this look of confusion on his face that never goes away. The pacing is all over the place and terrible, the guitar band music stock was just that bad, and many more bad things. The only thing that kept it from a 1 or less is that I didn't see the ending coming exactly that way. It had me surprised at the end and it made a lot of sense so well played there, and I am not easily deflected when guessing movies. Sure, you may have guessed it right away, but it didn't feel that way and felt more like a PTSD film rather than what it was. I liked the tie-ins with the woman also, like was she a soldier at all? I wouldn't watch it again, but at least this was good. The ending also tied everything up very nicely and didn't leave you feeling "what a waste of time." actually, it was ok Only because of the ending. This movie felt like the guy that pitched it wrote the last 40 pages and wanted to call it Jacob's Ladder after the other popular cult classic from the 70's, and the producer said "this is 40 good pages of script, but it needs another 50 pages." So he went home and worked real hard on it and turned it in, used spell check and everything. Unfortunately, it was a mess overall.

Dr. Jackson Avery and Michael Ealy. Need I say more? Intense action thriller. Critics aren't always right 🙃

Wasn't expecting this to be so good; but I loved it!

It's pretty funny that so many people seem to think a remake of a film is supposed to offer the exact equal viewing experience as the original film. It's also profoundly unfair. This film didn't have the budget of the original, and it's obvious at times; some of the visual effects are noticeably "cheap", the audio is anemic, and the film's direction is inconsistent. This doesn't mean it's patently bad, however. It accomplishes the disorientation and confusion one would expect - just look at the other reviews professing confusion and an inability to follow the narrative. By 2019 standards, and whilst operating within a limited budget, this film was nowhere near as bad as it could have been.
