Possum Reviews

... One of the most unique and memorable films that the genre has produced in the past decade. [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 5/5 | Oct 30, 2024

Atmosphere is well constructed, but never realizes the horrifying final confrontation with repressed trauma which is somewhat a letdown...the screenplay feels a little underdeveloped and sparse in places, and at some points the film feels stuck on repeat.

The most disturbing bedtime story you'll ever see, Possum ... is a deeply unsettling tale that gradually crawls under the skin to shake its audience to the very core.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Mar 29, 2021

It's a love letter to abandoned places and anonymous spaces, swept through with dead foliage and rot.

Harris is superb in this. He's completely on the level with the screenplay and threw himself into the role with a mesmerizing and polarized performance.

| Oct 30, 2019

[Possum's] shiver-inducing, claustrophobic, hauntingly brilliant nightmare fuel, powered by an engagingly disturbing central performance from Sean Harris.

| Original Score: 9/10 | Sep 26, 2019

A quietly nasty gem that'll make you re-think British horror altogether.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jun 5, 2019

Possum manages to not only push boundaries with its nightmarish imagery, but also find the right narrative journey to justify those scares.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 19, 2019

Holness conjures a disturbing view of what child abuse does to an adult later in life, mixing British kitchen sink realism with surreal dark fantasy.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Apr 28, 2019

An ambitiously unpleasant and gorgeously stark film shot on 35mm.

| Apr 15, 2019

Chilling genre fare that crawls its way beneath your skin like dirt under badly-bitten fingernails.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Apr 15, 2019

Possum is not particularly scary, but its portrait of a ruined life and horror of psychological trauma will haunt viewers well after the cut to black.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 5, 2019

The monster here is all too real, and Possumexpertly works through it, leaving behind a ghostly memory of a tragic story beautifully told.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 4, 2019

It's almost too creepy and unnerving for its own good.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Feb 11, 2019

In taking his inspiration from Jimmy Savile, Holness has placed at the centre of his film the sort of bogeyman who could give even Michael Myers nightmares.

| Jan 26, 2019

Unsettling niche British horror film.

| Original Score: B+ | Dec 11, 2018

Once again, I'll state how surprising this film is when you consider who made it, but I think that fact makes it all the more excellent.

| Original Score: 8/10 | Nov 21, 2018

Despite all it has going for it, the movie's undercooked plot and dialogue keep it from breaking out of its trauma.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Nov 8, 2018

It slowly builds tension to a disturbing denouement.

| Nov 2, 2018

The film has a striking aesthetic and atmospheric assurance that takes a particular British miserabilism into near-abstract terrain, not unlike Cronenberg's vaguely similar (if more rigorously plotted) "Spider."
