Possum Reviews

Feb 3, 2025

I gotta be honest… this one just did not do it for me. At all.

Deeply disturbing. Philip is mentally ill and obsessed with a strange spider like puppet with a human head. For some reason, he is forced to return to his deceased parents home where his crazy uncle Maurice lives. The house is filled with soot from the fire that no one has cleaned. Every where Philip goes seems old, dark and dirty. Philip is taunted by bad memories which is explained at the end. This is not a pleasant film, but will appeal to David Lynch fans. Moody ,dark and depressing, but in a good way.

Saw this on a top films list. The writer must have been on acid. What a complete slog with no pay off

Waste of time, and extremely boring

Movies absolutely can delve into themes by means of surreal and abstract means. However, it's incredibly difficult to be invested in a movie that immediately goes almost fully into being surreal and abstract, without any foundation in which to ground the story in. That's what this movie is. Its themes are entirely understandable and cohesive, however it decides to be entirely about an extreme surreal representation, and not give you any real means to understand what's happening until it's far too late. There are much more enjoyable ways to go about a story like this that encapsulates trauma and inherent abuse. While there is talent about in its construction, it's plagued by being utterly too invested in being an indirect telling of the story it wants to be. Ultimately, Possum is so wrapped up in how it wanted to tell a story, it forgot to have the book in front of them and dictate. It's entirely the feelings of the story, without any of the substance. It'll appeal to many, but not those who want or need that substance in order to be attached to the narrative.

A grimy melodrama with sparse dialog. Somewhat like a David Lynch oddity, but not as good. I will not watch this a second time.

Blind-bought the blu-ray for a few quid. Turned out to be one of my best purchases.

One of the best moody slow burns in horror. The grimey, practical sets and direction, unsettling story and sudden disturbing imagery made for perfect psychological terror. It left an indelible mark of which I'll never forget. I highly recommend if you're a fan of the sparce arthaus horror aesthetic.

Why does this even exist?

it's overrated, but it's still pretty good. it's very slow, empty, and gloomy, and while there is an explanation for basically every part of the film, i think it is missing something.

Absolute master piece.

This movie is full of nonsense poems and riddles and will make you feel like a "possum". Just like the animal (possum) when you watch this flick you'll fall into a sleep like trance and awake only to wonder what the hell it was you just watched.

Appeared to set a tone with an uneasy tension. This led to nothing as nothing really happens apart from travelling to various locations with his bag. As the film dragged on with little happening that the only interest of what was in the bag that kept me watching lost its appeal. I even fell asleep and guessed the ended. Astonishing how some films are given such ratings. People really have no idea what is a good film nowadays.

Extremely slow and repetitive with little payoff.

There was nothing going on except looking confused in marshland and waking up randomly. Also I struggled to see any plot throughout the film apart from a man trying to get rid of a weird puppet. Considering it was released in 2018 it shouldn't look like it was filmed on an iPod nano.

Unbelievably boring. The 90% Rotten Tomatoes score must have been only from artistic film critics. There was no dialog and practically no movement. I wasted half an hour watching this, then I just couldn't take it anymore.

Great acting, imagery, framing, and it all ties together at the end.
