Reminiscence Reviews
The story was compelling and the concept was intriguing, but the film's poor writing is what ruined it for me. I enjoyed watching it, but it could've been better.
I see a lot of bad reviews but ive just watched 12/2024 and i got to say i enjoyed it lot, veronica and hugh have great chemistry, the story is diferent, love the narrations, love the plot twist and what a beautifull ending, its not boring, the attention to detail is amazing, the scene with the sinking piano is stunning, its has some flaws like most movies, but saying this movie is average i think people are just following a trend of bad mouthing cause everyone did,i dont know!movies should make you feel something and i felt great watching reminiscense!!!!overall one of the best movies ive seen this year by far,5.9 is ridiculous on my opinion, for me its a 7.4 solid.a rate that low almost made me not watch it im glad i did.
The story takes place in a not so distant future, where a lot of land is underwater, and people wake up at night. Hugh Jackman stars as "Nick Bannister", a specialist in a new form of reliving your memories. The story is thrust forward as Rebecca Fergusson's "Mae" comes in needing to use Bannister's services to find some lost keys. The movie is a throwback to old school crime noir. Jackman narrates throughout, people wear fedoras and most takes place at night. Some other clear inspirations include "Blade Runner", with its analog future esthetic. And "Vertigo", with the man obsessed with learning about a mysterious woman. If you are going to cheat on your paper, you might as well copy off the best students in the class. Hugh Jackman puts in a great performance as always, and he tried and true chemistry with "Greatest Showman" co-star Rebecca Ferguson. The action scenes are creative and well filmed. The scenes themselves are a bit contrived, like the film felt they just needed a fight scene and shootout. But they are very good fight scenes and shootouts. Honestly, I quite enjoyed this film. I liked the world they created, all the actors play their role well, and the mystery unfolded very neatly. They gave the audience all the necessary clues and the conclusion is both simple but clever. The thing I didn't care for was the film's on-the-nose commentary. There are times where it comes across very pretentious. And the dialogue from everyone is a bit off. Nobody talks the way these people do, they all speak in these noble platitudes, never like a normal human conversation. A bit pretentious at times, and some tonal mismatches. But still a well-acted, engaging mystery with a creative set up. Put on some rose-tinted glasses and enjoy.
Reminiscence - 5.5/10. Lisa Joy directs one of the most disappointing films of the year with her directorial debut, Reminiscence. With an all star cast, incredible visuals, and interesting ideas, the film has its positives. But its downfall comes in the form of not being able to bring a level of intrigue or interest other movies similar to this one have been able to create. The film reminds of classic film noir stories mixed in with modern day ideas. Following a detective who is trying to piece together why his ladylove all of a sudden disappeared. Using state of the art tech that dives into people's memories, he digs deep to find that she wasn't who she seemed she was. What could have been an amazing film on par with other big budget thought provoking films like Blade Runner 2049, this film unfortunately misses the mark by a long shot. Lisa Joy has a great visual flair. That is evident with her work on Westworld. The world we see in this movie is visually stunning, with some great set pieces. And the performances are great, with a nice throwback performance from Hugh Jackman and solid turns for Thandie Newton and Rebecca Ferguson. However, its the way the story unfolds that makes the film lose its steam pretty quickly. Along with a similarity to the device used in Inception, the movie makes you want to compare itself to other movies right away. Its originality comes in the form of making a detective story happen in a climate change world that is severely flooded. It makes for an interesting backdrop, but that backdrop is not used to its full extent in my opinion. Hopefully, Joy gets another shot at making a movie, because she definitely has the keen eye for visuals and world building. But unfortunately, this is a movie you will forget about real soon.
The philosophy of this film is kind of bizarre, there comes a point where the characters embody some kind of Greek philosopher. But the film is great material for making Hugh's edit
Confusing story plot. It may have the potential to be a remarkable sci-fi drama, but the execution was poor.
Waterworld + Blue Velvet + Dark city. Why Writers guild is always on strike ? Because they can't write anything but bad cocktails.
I had to track down a way to review movie. Reason is I made me waste almost 2 hours of my life and made me miserable for doing so. I watch a lot of Netflix and this could possibly be my worst choice and there have been some doozy’s
Deep and thought provoking , Brilliant!
What a kook of a movie. Please can I get back the 75 minutes I wasted of my life.
Reminiscence has a great story line with nice twists and turns. The love story side of the plot is well done. I thoroughly enjoyed this film.
I really enjoyed this movie... Hugh is still like 50% wolverine, but they toned down the machismo and didn't expose him too much 😂, and focused on the story. It has only a few twists, never letting the viewer be entangled by the story but never giving away the conclusion until it's the right time. Hugh Jackman gives 100% in all his movies and I wasn't disappointed by the acting at all. There also isn't a huge focus on the back-story/setting (which could be another movie entirely on its own), giving you a few visuals to demonstrate the setting, and a few lines from various characters pasts to explain how Miami is how it is currently...
This movie is not worthy of the casting. Amazing cast. Not suspenseful. The narration was unnecessary. Not a bad storyline, but the movie could have been so much better.
I appreciate the not-at-all-subtle warning regarding climate change (and completely agree with the sentiment) but this wasn't a good movie. It may have given Hugh Jackman something to do, and it's nice to see the stunning Rebecca Ferguson in something other than the Mission Impossible series - but this picture did nothing for me. Pass.
Jeez, made it to about 42 minutes and jacked it in. Dull. Could have been good, but dragged on and didn't go anywhere. Acting fine. Production fine. Poorly executed story led to boredom. Not worth it tbh.
Even with a well-known and talented cast, this movie was not good. It's like it was supposed to be moody and suspenseful, but instead it was like they just turned the monitor brightness down and gave us water with terribly long fight scenes. And the love story wasn't believable.
🍅 6.3/10 It's wolverine in the water looking for his wifey through his memories I like the idea and it's executed pretty well. The set pieces are great in the mystery is fun. I sure will certainly say there's a lot of really goofy parts in this film that didn't need to be goofy. I mean it's kind of funny, but I would've rather had a more serious tone, because those goofy parts are just too goofy like there's a shootout sequence it's very corny and super goofy. That's all I can say, is just goofiness 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 Grade B
Found this review on IMDB, which articulated the way I felt about this perfectly: good performances? Check. Good cinematography? Check. Creative visual effects? Check. Intriguing concept and interesting world? Check. A boring, generic corporate corruption plot? Check. Not knowing what the actual central conflict of the film is until about 90 minutes in? Check. Underdeveloped character relationships that cause you to not understand or care why our lead character is so hell-bent on doing the things he does? Check. Not including any plot or character elements that relate to the semi-apocalyptic setting of the movie, rendering it utterly pointless? Check.
Where to begin? There's the waste of this cast on such a terrible screenplay, the poorly directed action scenes, the voice-over narration as lazy world building and the design elements that lack any imagination. I'd say it was laughably bad but that would imply that there was fun to be had in viewing this interminable bore.
Loved the fresh take on the film noir. Beautifully shot! Rebecca Ferguson is so underrated. Didn't really need the flooded city but I can see what they were trying to do.
