Sinners Reviews

Sinners exists in the horror space but isn’t really a horror movie. It’s more than that. It’s an unflinching look at Jim Crow era politics, the power of the blues and identity politics. But when it goes horror it goes hard. Bravo for an original story!

Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan deliver a vampire movie for the ages.

Ryan Coogler delivers a surprising blend of period horror and gangster cinema. [Full review in Spanish]

in spite of its many recognizable allusions to other movies...there’s nothing like Sinners. It’s as wild, at times, as an idea that emerged directly from the id and was never revised. I recommend it based on that fact alone.

Could be an onscreen adaptation of The Delectable Negro if it were in the vein of From Dusk Till Dawn

| Original Score: 5/5 | Apr 24, 2025

It has the rare distinction of being the perfectly imperfect movie. It's a messy masterpiece and I wouldn't have it any other way.

| Original Score: A | Apr 24, 2025

…easily the best film of 2025 to date, Sinners is a super-stylish thriller than sees Ryan Coogler embrace, recyle and embellish genre tropes…a rare, self-contained, innovative stand-alone horror movie that packs an absolute knockout punch…

| Original Score: 5/5 | Apr 24, 2025

A deliciously gory, wildly sexy, soulful & visionary masterpiece. ‘Sinners’ reunites Oscar-nominated filmmaker, Ryan Coogler & long-time friend and collaborator actor Michael B. Jordan for their fifth collaboration, in what may be Coogler’s best film yet.

Beautifully made and ambitious that it helps me forgive its flaws

You’ll be hard pressed to find a better-looking film this year.

Music is liberation in Sinners...

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Apr 23, 2025

If you expect something austere and auteurish from Sinners, you'll be surprised to find it has all the thrills of a good popcorn movie. But its implications are more daring and expansive.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Apr 23, 2025

Sinners is a special movie. It's not only one of the most fun and inventive blockbusters in a while, but it also has real meat on its bones. This is a movie packed with both entertainment value and messages.

| Original Score: A | Apr 23, 2025

Mesmerizing, tonally perfect, and simultaneously wholly (well) influenced and extremely original. As sexy and soulful as the blues itself and as terrifying as the blues felt viscerally in 1930s.

| Original Score: 9/10 | Apr 23, 2025

Puts Ryan Coogler securely on the Mount Rushmore of exciting young directors.

| Original Score: A+ | Apr 23, 2025

The film’s atmosphere and actors are extremely seductive, even if its ideas don’t always feel fully formed.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 23, 2025

At its heart, SINNERS is a serious drama about the lives and struggles of Black Americans in the early 20th century. The vampire angle is more secondary… or rather, symbolic. This leads to a deeper, richer story with complex characters in shades of gray.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 23, 2025

Sinners is perhaps overambitious at times, but in a good way, down to its absurdly touching epilogue; the movie is overstuffed with terrific acting and marvelous music, and a big heart.

Do all the narrative and thematic threads come together? No. Sinners almost works better in parts than as a whole. But it’s always enthralling, as if you too is trapped in a spell, as if you’ve struck a bargain with the devil.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Apr 22, 2025

An action/horror masterpiece that will rate among 2025's best films - see it before anyone tells you anything about it
