What to Know

Critics Consensus

Bryan Singer's reverent and visually decadent adaptation gives the Man of Steel welcome emotional complexity. The result: a satisfying stick-to-your-ribs adaptation.

Namrata Joshi Outlook The man doesn't have an ounce of charisma and at best can only be described as an expressionless log of wood. In retrospect, I'd settle for our own delectable Hrithik. Rated: 2/4 Jan 15, 2019 Full Review Eric Kohn Reverse Shot The movie runs nearly half an hour longer than it should, with a new plot strand introduced in the third act that has questionable vitality in the presumed sequel. Jul 6, 2010 Full Review Brian Tallerico UGO May be the most reverent superhero film ever made. Mar 24, 2007 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Successfully channels everything that people like about Superman, at times, while other times feel like it's merely trying to ensure people remember that the character still exists. Rated: 3/5 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The glossiness of the visuals and the faithfulness of the cast in mimicking their ’70s counterparts makes the film a fitting revisit to a meandering property. Rated: 4/10 Jul 11, 2022 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site Superman Returns ... is not the worst of today's entertainments, but interest in it eventually collapses under the weight of the film's self-seriousness and overbearing special effects. Mike P This is a very "New Mediocre Hollywood Tries To Fill The Shoes of Old Classic Hollywood and Fails" type movie; and I also shudder to think what was going on behind the scenes with Bryan Singer and Kevin Spacey in the driver's seat on this troubled production... But at least Singer (for all his drawbacks) TRIES to recreate a classic here; and gives the project all the love and respect it deserves; plus a modicum of competency; which is what the last chapter was missing. And it's great seeing all the missing Brando footage...And hearing the John Williams theme song again...And while the plot isn't bad, this is sorely miscast; Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth just can't hold a candle to Christopher Reeve or Margot Kidder; and Henry Cavill and Amy Adams fared WAY better in the next chapter. So this is sort of a mediocre but not bad movie; it's a misfire; but at least the franchise is headed in the right direction at this point. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/19/25 Full Review Eric H I just was rewatching Superman Return's and honestly still enjoyed it look singer tried to make a Superman and basically just remade the Christopher Reeves Superman was it not the best no was it the worst definitely not look at Jared Leto's joker horrible what about Val kilmer as Batman I enjoy Superman returns I think Brandon did a good job I enjoyed it and would watch it again Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/16/25 Full Review Paul S This isn't the worst superhero movie I've ever seen, but it definitely isn't the best. I didn't feel that Superman and Lois Lane had good chemistry, and they made Lois kind of annoying. It was fun to watch, but I don't think it does Superman justice. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/25 Full Review Edgar M A really beautiful Superman movie. A little boring but just a little. Is such an underrated film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/01/25 Full Review Erral A This movie feels like a beautiful, cinematic love letter to a true Superman. The music is phenomenal! While this Superman may be a bit more shy because of the performance by Brandon Routh. However it creates an almost reverence that fits the music. The tease and very real place of Superman and Lois Lanes son adds so much mystery and eagerness to a true Superman fans heart. I also find it funny and enjoyed that lex remains similar to the portrayal in the 1978 outing with his real estate obsession. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review Michael P It's good as a Superman movie but the movie itself is a bit boring and way to long. It's difficult to judge the actors for that they did since at times it feels like they're trying to imitate their original counterparts but at other times it feels like they're trying to do their own thing which is when they were great. The story itself is really good but lacked action and thrills I would expect and the last 20 minutes felt unnecessary. Overall it's fine Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Read all reviews
