MobLand: Season 1 Reviews

The show itself is nothing special, a stale gangster story with nothing new to offer. Maybe someone with a fresher eye and sensibility than Guy Ritchie could’ve brought more energy to the table

| Apr 22, 2025

Create an unholy alliance between Bennett, writer of the gangland drama Top Boy, and Ritchie, that purveyor of ludicrously OTT crime romps, and you’re hardly going to expect them to birth a courtly period romance. What we have instead is MobLand.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 7, 2025

Off to a promising start, MobLand needs to expand on the tension and star power in future episodes to keep viewers watching beyond Hardy and his grizzled accent.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 5, 2025

Guy Ritchie directs with in-your-face verve, but the members of Mobland’s central crime clan will have to stop being so uniformly psychotic for viewers to truly get lock, stock and smoking barrels invested.

The idea that a Tom Hardy character cajoling, threatening or influencing someone is an art form in itself is the core of MobLand, a decent new gangster epic that casts Hardy as top fixer Harry Da Souza.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 1, 2025

It’s a sure bet that upcoming episodes of ‘MobLand’ will develop into a memorable action-packed series that will capture the audience’s imaginations with twists and turns along the way.

As much as I love when Hardy spits out an utterly unheard of enunciation, his casual everyman-ness gives Harry -- and his show! -- a jolt of authoritative star power that helps it start off strong.

| Original Score: B- | Mar 31, 2025

This show obviously has no interest in being as zany as The Gentlemen, but more than the first episode, the second is a chance to see how MobLand could take itself seriously and still be entertaining.

Ritchie brings his A-game to this two-episode premiere, shooting the twisty plot with just enough style to elevate it without pulling attention from what really works here: sharp writing and an even sharper performance from Tom Hardy.

| Mar 28, 2025

Brosnan and Mirren are thrilling to watch, as always.

| Mar 28, 2025

The script... is as precise and nuanced as one would expect from the writer of last year’s remarkable Day of the Jackal, and the overall production is extremely handsome, stylish and may well sweep one up and across the Thames.

| Mar 28, 2025

Hardy makes it all worthwhile but it’s the tiresome Ritchie cliches that grate -- and they’re everywhere.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 28, 2025

MobLand is in need of a good fixer.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 28, 2025

If MobLand is just a well-acted gangster tale, there’s worse company to have. But there’s enough here to be hopeful that it has deeper ambitions.

| Mar 28, 2025

The series is a silly, grizzly jaunt, in typical Guy Ritchie fashion, and some of the stars are an absolute hoot. The trouble is that other than a few entertaining performances and a well placed Fontaines DC opening track, it’s really nothing new.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 28, 2025

This Paramount+ crime saga reeks of regurgitation, throwing up so many underworld clichés that it proves difficult to stomach.
