A Raisin in the Sun Reviews
It's a mesmerizing work by everyone envolved. A fantastic movie, that resonates deeply until this day.
A dramatic, emotionally turbulent masterwork, complete with stellar performances, smartly-written characters, and a timeless, poignant message.
It seems most here are reviewing the history, themes, and cause, but not the film itself. Yes. It is an exceptional, historic, and important play, with deep and resonating themes. The MOVIE is never more than an uninspired filmed play. It is no wonder director Petrie never achieved great success in motion pictures. While the acting is great, it is stage acting, meant to reach the back row of the theater. There are practically no quiet moments that a good film would have. The writing, photography and editing never escape a stage bound atmosphere either. For a lesson in how to transfer a play to a film, look to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? or A Streetcar Named Desire.
The Stellar cast in this story has no equal!
The actors do phenomenal work here, especially Sidney Poitier.
I think A Raisin In the Sun 1961 was really well done and very good at staying close to the original novel. My favorite part of this film is how the characters emotions are shown, I feel as though these are real people and I feel when they are hurt or when they are happy. Walter is my favorite character for an example, showing how he is able to go from happiness to sadness in a few seconds showing how the emotional scale works. In the film when Bobo comes and tells Walter about what happens to the money we can really tell the grief and the pain he was feeling. Right before this scene however we see Walter happy and singing his heart out, leading on to where the money was taken. We feel the emotional attachment to Walter and Mama in this scene too. I do say that if you want a movie that is close to the novel in video format this would be a great representation.
Timeless! A MUST SEE for everyone, in any year & any age. A lesson in life that touches every sense of our being. Should be shown in all schools, jails & classes of people in every level, every race, creed & color. An all time CLASSIC!
A great portrayal of an African-American family struggling to get ahead. All of the cast members give great performances. The photography is excellent, and the editing is tight. I think this is a must see film.
One of the best thespians, Sydney Poitier applying this craft of acting in this screen play, "Raisin In The Sun," showed so much heart, even when "backed into a corner." Since humanity is not in charge of impartial opportunity blessings, who is? Who Is Creator In Charge Of Divine Providence written within The Declaration Of Independence? What instruments, also of Promissory, Creeds, & Rights as Creator Is In Charge Of God Given Duties By anyone being in the image and likeness of God, for Pledged Sacred Honor, Self Evident Not Take Away Legally Sacredness Of Human Rights? Two written examples are, The Preamble and Bill Of Rights written within The Constitution of these United States Of America. Since Congress may not establish morality by religion, nor deny the practice thereof, whereas, secret societies are strictly forbidden within the pages of The Constitution of these United States Of America, what would be a seditious set of behaviors with regards to Church With State? What does attempted overthrow of Sacredness Of Human Rights, living within the borders or areas of education, reports of society happenings, and governance of entities therein? It seems as art imitates life, important questions are raised in literature, stage plays, screen plays, music appreciation does rely on ability to describe with pronunciation harmonics in alliterative vocal wording, and other such conveyances. ~ Wishes from the depths of Creator Given Being, for harmonious well Being to rejoicing overflowing gladness abounding joy. In The Holy Bible, it is well known, The Joy Of The Lord sends strength, therefore confidence, as no one is a stoic, never to receive harm, but for unencumbered living in Creation on Creator Created Earth. Have a wonderful day.
The very real and important context of systemic racism, the struggle for black people in the USA to create generational wealth, and how the oppression even makes people take it out on each other...was all lost and forgotten in the final scene when Sydney Poitier makes a half-rousing speech, a unilateral decision on behalf of the family, and everyone immediately forgives and forgets that only minutes before he was drunk, verbally abusing his family, and lied, stole and squandered the family inheritance. I know that this is an adaptation from the book/play and that at the time realism and subtlety probably took a back seat to the message, but I could not accept the delusionally cheerful ending “He done come into his own, today, didn’t he?!”
Great fantastic phenomenal movie starring some great actors. I felt engaged the entire movie and never felt bored. This movie gave me the American dream movie I needed. That the American dream has ups and downs.
While "A Raisin in the Sun" might not sound very interesting, it definitely is. Thanks to excellent presentations of each of the characters and their perspectives, director Daniel Petrie brought this play to life on the big screen with brilliant characters written by Lorraine Hansberry.
If you have to watch A Raisin in the Sun watch this version, but don't watch A Raisin in the Sun.
Hello Reader, From My POV: A RAISIN IN THE SUN Film is a Classic Film that should be Watched Anytime, and Not Just Black History Month.
Sensational movie! An excellent study of the psychology of ambition both positive and negative acted wonderfully by Sydney Pottier.
This movie is such fucking bullshit because this is just pure and utter family drama and who the fuck wants to hear that shit
While A Raison In The Sun was great film in it's own way, the atmosphere felt cramped and it was hard to enjoy it at certain points when you're looking at the same room and place for over 2 hours.
The tragedy is well portrayed and compelling.
