The conflicts and melodrama are too straightforward and anticipated to have an impact beyond the closing credits; it's a superbly-acted yet tragically small picture.

The role of Deedee gives Shirley MacLaine her best role in many a year and she is superb. Anne Bancroft as Emma is stunning, and when the two women team up for a 7-minute confrontation scene, the screen almost shoots sparks.

Herbert Ross' The Turning Point may not be the first movie ever to have utilized the background of the ballet world, nor even the definitive one, but it is the first to have used exhaustively and intelligently.

The Turning Point lacks a script. Herbert Ross is more than an acceptable director... but here he vacillates between making a melodrama or a documentary about ballet. [Full Review in Spanish]

You yield to The Turning Point relucantly, knowing well that it is conning you -- with sentiment, with flamboyance, with sheer slickness.

For a film ostensibly dedicated to physical grace, Ross's images are unforgivably clumsy.

What stands out are the ballet performances.

The Turning Point is one of the best films of its era.

Though made in 1977, this strained effort tries to combine a 1940s woman's picture with backstage melodrama set in the modern ballet world.

The Turning Point is entertaining, not for discovering new material, but for treating old material with style and romantic feeling that, in this day and age, seem remarkably unafraid.
