Gettysburg Reviews
I had ready Gettysburg by Stephen Sears before watching the movie. I enjoyed its focus on the conflict and decisions that where made before and during the battle. There was a lack of Hollywooding the historical battle and turning it into romantic deviations. It stayed pretty close to the battle and the outcomes of the decisions made.
Its a Great War film Its probably an hour to long and there are some cheesy scenes with people dying but Its also a crazy production of man power so many people on screen at once. Very good. 7.9/10
Gettysburg is an exemplary film based on the incredible true story of the most pivotal engagement of the Civil War as seen through the eyes of the men who fought there. The superb performances of Jeff Daniels as Joshua Chamberlain and Tom Berenger as James Longstreet are not only Oscar worthy, but truly breath life into a largely forgotten period of American history. With breathtaking practical effects, stunning on-location filming, a beautiful and often emotional score, thousands of reenactors, thought provoking dialogue and internal and external conflicts such as only a war can bring, Gettysburg is a film that both casual viewer and hardcore historian will thoroughly enjoy.
Just brilliant movie. Have watched numerous times and really enjoy this movie
This movie describes the Confederate soldiers as heroes fighting for "Virginia" and never really digs into the fact that they were fighting for the right to own and subjugate human beings.
Saw this one the first time a long long time ago, still an excellent movie
A masterpiece that will never be outclassed.
Still the greatest movie ever made on the war, despite its many flaws.
This movie did a great job protraying the battle of Gettysburg In terms of an overall battle and avoiding politics as much as possilbe this civil war movie is one of the best. The Actors performed beyond expectation going in to what I saw. In terms of scale this movie nails it. Where the movie falls off is some of the dialogue between commanders, in between the battle, I feel that some of the non battle plan dialogue is just robotic (dont know im not a historian by anymeasure). I noticed the alot cannon props in the movie didnt roll when fired (just a nit pick) . Great job thou.
Director Ronald F. Maxwell tells a historical epic of one of the bloodiest struggles in American history but also adapting the 1973 novel The Killer Angels by Michael Sharra A huge cast of caliber actors from Jeff Daniels to Sam Elliot to Martin Sheen to Stephen Lang to Tom Berenger The Civil War left an uneasy mark on the nation putting the North and South against each other; the Confederates vs the Union in 1863 General Robert E. Lee prepares to invade the northern part of Pennsylvania for over a three day conflict Colonel Joshua Chamberlain leads the 70,000 men army Maxwell follows the frontlines and maneuvering strategies of both sides The filmmakers remain very authentic to the time period from the costumes to the battle sequences to the living conditions to the army roles The battle scenes are intense and heavy but it is an extensive 4 hours which will test audiences patience A past event such as this thanks to Maxwell allows us to contemplate what could’ve been done to avoid such a bloody struggle There’s enough of a contemporary view without tarnishing the accuracy or exploiting the facts with propaganda It sad learning the reasons many joined because they were bored, thought it was for the thrill or they didn’t have a choice We are reminded of what deep divisions can lead to, how intolerance of those who think differently and can lead to dire consequences Perhaps we can ultimately learn from the past and avoid fratricide A lengthy film but it amazingly recreated a historical event that’s hard to forget
A truly great movie, A pivital time in Americans history. A must for any lover of history.
The scope and scale of the battle scenes in this film may never be matched again, especially in an era of CGI and VFX. A true classic that does beautiful justice to the Civil War.
Nice film. Great world-building and a film for Civil War buffs, but the director's cut is a little too long for my liking. I also wished that we get to know some of these characters' loved ones so that we know what's at stake if they die.
A first-rate historical epic with great performances, a strong story, exciting battle sequences, and a powerful original score! A+
Really , really good film Not as good as the earlier on in the series, Gods and Generals, but still very good. Film makers could learn a lot by seeing how the use of historical reenactors improve their work. When it come to the extras the reenactors know their stuff, need very little direction and training and look great.
An incredible almost word by word depiction of Michael Sharas famous novel, "Killer Angel's." This movie focuses almost entirely on the three day Battle of Gettysburg. Main focal points such as Little Round Top, Reynolds Woods, Pickett Charge, and an array of Generals that are brought to life with incredibly believable realism. One of the most iconic scenes in the entire movie may be the opening credits, and comparison of real life persona next to the actors versions. While it isn't entirely accurate and can be left up in the air for interpretation in terms of the conversations, thoughts and so forth, it provides a great setting and sense of what it may have been like at the battle of Gettysburg, for soilders and Generals alike. The movie can for some be a bit challenging to follow without some sort of prior knowledge and particularly stands out to educators and history buffs. Worth mentioning, this movie was meant to be a trilogy that never came to pass, God's and Generals its first and Last Full Measure (never produced) as the last. It doesn't affect the movie and concludes as did the battle of Gettysburg with the retreat of the Confederacy across the swelling Potomac.
"I have no Division"- Chills......................
Seemed to go on forever. Leaving out 80% of the dialogue might have made it watchable. Action scenes were good.
I watch this movie periodically. It is moving story of a critical battle in our history. The actors perform their roles convincingly. Pickett's charge with the thousands of civil war reenacts is tremendous event
Absolutely brilliant greatest Civil war infact any war film ever for me . 4 hrs of Filmatic heaven . Must see infact must see again and again and again
