Like the romcoms it's modeled after, Late Night offers an escape into a world with softer edges, brighter colors, and simpler solutions

I liked it, but I wanted to love it... It's almost like it pulls its punches here and there -- I wanted more bite from it.

Mindy Kaling wrote the screenplay with Emma Thompson in mind and you can see the character was crafted for exactly her talents.

Kaling and Thompson are going after something different, and while it's acerbically funny at times it also feels quite real and of the moment.

I just wasn't convinced by the actual performance of the show...some very funny jokes in the first two-thirds...fine and fun, but I wanted more.

Heightened by an impressive performance from Thompson, it's a fun movie that tackles a variety of issues, including sexism in the workplace, with panache.

Humor can be a great equalizer, and Thompson and Kaling are terrific as two women who are funny as hell and should never be underestimated.

Mindy Kaling's Late Night takes aim at the boring sameness of white patriarchy and amusingly shakes up comedy homogeny.

Playing an imperious Brit who sneers at lesser mortals from a pedestal of "The Devil Wears Prada"-style privilege and power, Thompson crackles with just the right amount of condescension, cruelty and whip-smart comic timing.

I'm not sure the film gets all of this right, but it's an intriguing, enjoyable, well-cast effort.

What does work - a lot - is Thompson, who conveys wit, intelligence and capability better than just about anyone in the movies today.

Thompson and Kaling don't even need to be acting here. Like all women, they've long had to navigate real-world misogyny. But they also know how to find the humour in it.

But for much of its running time, Late Night feels like two punchlines struggling for equal airtime.

Kaling's screenwriting debut addresses modern sore spots with gentle humor and a big heart.

You'll have a good time nevertheless. But don't be surprised if you come out wishing that there actually were a late-night comedy show starring Emma Thompson instead of just a movie about one.
