Late Night Reviews

Jan 21, 2025

Loveable movie, great acting. Mindy is iconic, Emma Thompson was great, following their workship & seeing what happened next stayed interesting throughout. Behind the scenes of what goes into a Late Night show is interesting to see the other side of the screen.

I give it this review because I was impressed Mindy Kaling wrote the whole freaking thing right in the middle of the beginnings of a global crisis ...

Uncommon interactivity to one working environment still would find intrigue in the structural ethics, as well a humane heart when well enveloped. Possibly satirical, and if not, the film’s traced with exceptionality between Kaling’s experienced proficiency and Thompson’s similarly sharped, characteristically layered approach as their partnership, both on- and offscreen, delve timely topics with keen resilience. (B+)

Cativa, reflete e diverte...

It's witty and makes accurate criticism of lazy late night tv host shows, but Emma Thompson isnt right for the role. She has elements of the not-so-likeable Ellen but you cant really believe she ever was popular, and she certainly doesnt convince as a 'now softened and more real' comedy talkshow presenter. ET always plays ET. She plays ET very well but there's never much warmth. So the premise of learning a hard lesson re humility and valuing others, especially fresh and very different others is lost somewhat. This could have been excellent but not with the clipped ET when she really can't unclip..

The actors were good, but the comedy sketch and jokes were right out of 2016 twitter and were supposed to be seen as incredible jokes. Thompson character was not really redeemed, her and her husband deserved one another :/

Basic but good. Funny and captivating plot.

No one dies. No blood. A relaxing movie to watch.

Horribly boring and unfunny.

Great comedy. It touches all the idiotic woke issues of today, always ending in the right position.

This film felt far too worthy overall. I didn't find it especially funny really, although it raises some good points and its certainly contemporary, referencing #MeToo, millennials etc., it just isn't an especially original or overly entertaining film really. Its definitely cheesy to an extent and it does tackle some genuine issues and the like but its certainly not a memorable film - more a 'meh' film. I did think Emma Thompson was a good choice to play the main role of Katherine though.

This movie was just ok...

I love Emma Thompson but I'm not sure why she took this role. The movie is not very funny and it is hard for me to believe that the late show host has so little interaction with their staff. Molly falls into the job and never grows in the role. I was ready to be entertained, but if you are looking for Devil Wears Prada, you won't find it here.

Just to add some balance to the reviews: This was horrible. Just a waste of time. I lasted 47 minutes. The writing was pathetic. I can't count how many movies I've watched in my life, but I've probably only not finished a dozen on the high side.

I knew it!!! I knew it all along Amy Ryan is too cute to be a bad guy in a movie

Good characters, decent plot, and some decent messages/commentary. Also a good pace. It was a little scattery at times with the character and it didn't quite seem to feel like a comedy at all times, but entertaining enough.

To say this plot has been done before is an understatement. But the biggest problem is that the "past her prime" Late Night host is neither relatable nor likable. Even casting a talent-less tool as the rising star vying for her job couldn't create enough sympathy to make this movie work. Asking us to root for her to keep a job she was lucky to have as long as she did, was like expecting us to hope Ebeneezer Scrooge fire's Bob Cratchit to give himself a raise. (Mindy, you're better than this!)

Enjoyed this more than I expected. Was lighthearted and a feel good underdog wins story. Great cast!

Surprisingly blown away! I will say I went into this movie with mediocre expectations... I wanted an easy to watch Mindy Kaling movie that provided me with a few cheap laughs and feel good moments. Emma Thompson serves up a phenomenal and most importantly incredibly believable character while Mindy is the down to earth, driven, oddball young woman we all secretly feel like we are inside. I finished the movie with a smile on my face and feeling like I've had a real look into the world of late night television. Truly shocked at my admiration for this film.
