The Spectacular Now Reviews
This is an interesting and fresh take on the teen film, but it's main downfall is it's ultimate lack of heart that makes the depressing and naturalistic aspects of this film come off dry and lifeless instead of emotional. Though it has plenty of interesting ideas, good dialogue, and Miles Teller gives a wonderful performance, I like this film more in concept than execution.
Miles Teller is a great actor. He carries this film and he has a lot of charisma. I liked how it handled its characters and felt the ending was honest with what was happening, even if it was not a happy ending. A well done movie that was fine watching once. Not sure if it is a film I would watch again.
Vale apena assistir? Sim com certeza. Nota: 7,5
The whole absent father trope where Sutter thinks his dad’s a great guy, only to meet him and go, "Oh no! My dad’s an alcoholic loser, I’m doomed!" was so cliché it hurt. Sutter is the worst protagonist ever, and his "romance" with Aimee had bad chemistry. Honestly, Brie Larson’s character had more purpose at the craft services table than in this movie. I would give this 1 star, but the production and acting isn’t THAT bad. But please don’t waste your time on this movie.
The plot is cliche and the ending is predictable, but the acting and production is great. It's a good movie, but not as good as everyone seems to think that it is
Really solid romantic drama. The performances are great, however, for it's short runtime it still feels a little slow.
Tried to find an innovation. However, it seemed to me not very different from all the other movies focusing on a similar American teenager life.
This was a great film that had many great themes to it. I can’t put my finger on what was missing but that’s nitpicking.
One of the best Shailene Woodley's movies on her youth.
A charming mess. Gets to the thpical dark night of the soul moment and then… ends. He is a drunk. She is a doormat. No one grows. Third act is a disaster.
Hoping for more depth and complexity. Great performances.
A must watch for romance lovers!
Perhaps the most adult adolescent movie I have yet to see. Almost every character is relatable in a myriad of ways, with beyond awesome chemistry between the two leads.
A hidden gem which deals honestly with real life issues. Definitely worth your time.
A complete waste of time. I'd rather watch paint dry to be honest.
Only stumbled across this film because of a list on YouTube but was very pleasantly surprised. It handles the stresses of student life in a realistic way. The relationships also felt very real as well as the drama that comes with them. It's 100% something I recommend watching at least once to enjoy the beauty of it. It of course struggles in some aspects such as for me personally the male lead character feeling unlikeable at times which can derail a film for me personally but this comes from preference. Still, this film is honestly a niche hidden gem and deserves heaps of praise for what the cast and crew delivered to us.
Excruciating. I kept waiting for it to get better. It never did.
Another one of the finest films of 2013! A24 Films and director James Ponsoldt make a very high-ranking coming-of-age movie My first introduction to Miles Teller and also a continuation of Shailene Woodley’s acting talents Sutter Keely is the most friendly-spirited guy in his neighborhood and in high school He’s about to go to college and writes an essay about who he is He breaks up with his girlfriend, Cassidy and loses his part-time job He then comes across another senior named Aimee who also goes through a few difficulties with growing up As time goes on they get along famously eventually falling in love Sutter though has doubts about himself yet at one point his mom tells him he brings joy to everyone, he’s the happiest person she knows with the biggest heart This manages to avoid all the typical trappings of a story we’re familiar with; instead of crude sex jokes and debauchery the film really let’s the performances of its two leads carry everything I’m very glad too the main character I could relate to so much since he shares a lot of similarities with me Memories, emotions and a little bit of pain are what comes with being on the brink of adulthood Your life very well could be something else if you don’t start making changes, living in the moment isn’t a bad thing but it helps to have ambition, it’s not a bad thing to bring joy to others, there will always be another now tomorrow, keeping your guard up to not get hurt doesn’t always last A very good supporting cast includes a very young Brie Larson, Mary Elizabeth-Winstead, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Kyle Chandler This is a very honest and realistic look at teenagers that actually almost made me cry so that’s a real accomplishment It feels appreciated to have a movie like this with a main character becoming his own person inspite of himself with a charming, likable romantic lead next to him
One of the most confused movies I've seen this year, is unfinished everywhere, the 18 year old main character was even weirder than a clown and already a half alcoholic, it made little sense and descended into depression.
I loved it. It's nothing too outstanding, extraordinary, or i gotta say, spectacular, it's just an easy to watch high school movie and gave me lots of comfort plus a good cry. Idk, it felt genuine and realistic. I didn't relate to his situation but i related to his tone of feelings, thats why i felt comfortable and sympathized to Sutter so much.
