Tick, Tick... Boom! Reviews

It doesn't stop giving you an intimate seat to the creative process. Bravo.

This film was a lot better than I initially thought, I thought this was going to be more along the lines of an actor who just couldn't make it and then makes it but no this is my people the artists the people who actually make the things and I felt seen. Like all the chaos of coming up with the next game or book or in this game musical and all the other stuff and the fact that you get so self-centered during it all that you forget the people around you is so accurate. My one quarrel is that the pacing was a little off. The middle part of the film actually had the best pacing in my opinion.

A fitting tribute to Jonathan Larson and an auspicious film directorial debut from Lin Manuel Miranda. It captured the authenticity of that world so candidly and earnestly, that I wish Miranda directed the film version of Rent, which sadly felt cringe and horribly inauthentic in the hands of Hollywood studio executives at the time of its release. The original Broadway material’s adaptation into film in the hands of Miranda would have cemented Jonathan Larson’s legacy and provided a touchstone for young burgeoning musical theater lovers to discover. Needless to say, I hope Miranda is given more chances to direct.

This movie tells the (mostly) true story of Jonathan Larson, the man who would eventually create the hit musical, R*E*N*T*. It is a real, raw movie with beautiful performances from familiar actors, such as the star of the movie, Andrew Garfield. The music is really good, the choreography is excellent, the emotion in each scene is on-point and well-conveyed, and the movie gets across the tragedy and beauty of the aspiring creator. Highlighting the pains of a creative and everyday human beings, it is hard not to love the performances and characters, as well as the story in itself. It becomes relatable and beautiful, a movie I won’t long forget.

I'm typically not a huge fan of musicals, and I never cared for the play "Rent". So when I heard the premise for this film, I was not looking forward to watching it. But Lin-Manuel Miranda has managed to win me over once again. I love movies about people working hard to start a business, or win a championship or complete their life's work. Andrew Garfield plays Jonathan Larson, an aspiring playwriter for Broadway. Larson is trying to balance the responsibilities of everyday life, paying the bills, having a girlfriend and devoting his time to perfecting his life's work. Garfield and Lin-Manuel Miranda do an excellent job of making Larson a good everyman that audience's can relate to. He is trying to write his song, but also having to deal with the Sunday rush at the café he works in, and on top of that he has to deal with drama of his friends in the hospital and girlfriend wanting an answer. The film does an excellent job of helping you feel the stress of the whole situation. Where this movie is at is best is when its showing Larson grappling with the decision of when is it time to throw in the towel and get a "real" job. It is a problem that to a degree we can all relate to. Haven't we all had a dream job that certain point we had to decide not to pursue. At a certain point we all have to grow up and let reality sink in. I mean surely it isn't just me...right? The movie does a great job of showing both sides of the argument. There is a character that gives up on his dream of being an actor and instead settles for a simple desk job. And that's OK. This character isn't villainized or mocked for his decision. It shows that if your dream doesn't work out, you can move on. But on the other side, if your dream doesn't work at first, you can get up and try again. The one thing that holds me back from entirely singing this movies praises would be the main character can come across as very egotistical. There are certain sacrifices that have to be made for his dream, which is the way life goes. I just think he came across as a bit self-centered and never fully comes back from that. Maybe a nick-pick and certainly just a "me" problem. By comparison I also don't think the songs are as memorable as some of Miranda's other works like "Hamilton" and "In the Heights". I liked the songs, I liked the energy from all the actors, and the movie moves along at a fantastic pace. Even the small roles in the movie, were occupied by some very funny people. I was never bored in the movie. There was one part of the movie that it looked like some cliched relationship drama was going to play out. But the way they present it was both funny and unique. I say give it a watch, if not, you'll be sorry that you missed your chance.

Charming movie! Unique musical that used the songs to help move the story along and convey the character's emotions. Constant reminder that life is short.

LIFE CHANGING. Andrew Garfield is perfect. The music is perfect. Everything is perfect. I couldn't love it more if I tried.

this movie was the worst case of waste of time I have ever had, I cannot describe how much the storie doesn't have a focus, how much the protagonist is inumane, even though he has a lot of problems. His FIRST dying friend is put aside after 2 minutes, we never hear anything about him again. His SECOND dying friend almost had the little rest of his life destroyed because the protagonist DIDN'T FEEL LIKE BEING A NORMAL PERSON ONCE. All the effort in this movie was directed to the songs that WERE NOT TRANSLATED IN OTHER LANGUAGES, GIVING IT A LANGUAGE BARRIER TO EVERYONE WHO DOESNT KNOW ENGLISH. So yeah, don't watch it if you don't want to lose 2 hours of your life. BTW I created this account only so I could warn people about that movie.

Netflix’s Tick, Tick... Boom! is a missed opportunity. Larson’s masterpiece deserves a far better adaptation. This production fails to capture the heart and soul of the musical. As a dedicated fan, I’m disappointed. Hopefully, a future attempt will do justice to this incredible work.

I think I count as a bit of a theatre buff. I typically see 30+ shows a year - regional, touring, & community productions, and occasionally performances in London or New York. "Rent," which I have now seen four times, was the first show I ever saw on Broadway. That said, this just might be the most overhyped film of the year. "Tick" is an overly slick production where the stakes don't seem real. Not a single song in the show really grabbed me. You have to put a lot more depth of feeling into it when pretty much everyone watching already knows the ending. I went from wondering what other great songs the late Jonathan Larson might have had up his sleeve to the depressing realization that maybe "Rent" was all there was.

This is a story that explores into an artist's angst and despair as nothing around him seems to work. Yeah, that's for all of us writers out there. And it kicks off being highly relatable. With great musical, as expected from Lin-Manuel Miranda. However, there is something that this movie seems to be missing. Though the story is compelling and the cast fits perfectly, it still can't get the watcher to not look away from it and wander on all the stuff going around at home, notifications and scrolling on Instagram. A tension that seems to loosen itself in the worst moments.

One of the best musicals of the last five years. A true and poignant love letter to theater and the creative process and Andrew G is perfection. Great job directing shout out to Lin Manuel

Garfield rocks, the script is good, songs mostly work, and it is filled with Broadway people

I don't like musicals, so I was surprised that I enjoyed this film as much as I did. The film was well directed. Andrew Garfield gave a terrific award worthy performance. The film does a solid for Jonathan Larson's legacy and leaves you wondering what other great things Larson would have accomplished had he not died so young.

Really amazing acting by Andrew, the whole movie was pretty good, I was nervous when John was doing his presentation, really enjoyed the movie, songs were amazing and good production and direction

What a wonderfully made musical! The way the film works it's way through Larson's musical is brilliant. The acting is incredible, and the music is amazing. Surreal vocals, cinematography, and passion make Tick, Tick... Boom feel like that Boom! that make movies worth it.
